Gulf in class

(Oldest Posts First)

Just want to ask other posters their opinion?
After what we saw over the weekend with Kildare on the end of a massive hammering will players in other counties like ours want to train at all if all they can look forward to is a drubbing by the top teams in Croke park.
The bar is now set very high.

It is high time there was a second competition for say Div3/4 teams to play as the current system is a joke.... The back door system is hopeless and only makes sure the same teams make the last 4 each year... Fermanagh have reached 3 All-Ireland QF's over the years and are no closer to ever winning a first Ulster title... Change is needed as football is dieing a slow and painfull death...!!

Change must come and it must come soon or the GAA Officialdom will be guilty of presiding over the death of the game. The weekend was a new low with only the second half performance from the men in green providing any sort of relief.

Two tiers, tier one made up of teams in Division 1 and Division 2. Teams who are promoted from Division 3 in the year get to play in the top tier competition and teams relegated from Division 2 play in the second tier competition. This will reduce to 9 the number of teams who can't possibly play in the tier 1 competition at 1 January.

Semi finals of both competitions to be played at the same time and venue. The final of the second tier competition to be played on the eve of the final of the first tier competition.

The provincial championships are played as normal with the results taken into account with those of the National League in seeding the teams

I'd be all for a champions league/Europa league style structure.

Firstly, end the pre-season competitions like the McKenna cup and FBD league. Second, disband the u21 and minor grades. Simply no need for both. Replace them with u19 grade.

Play the leagues as normal. Then based on league standings, 8 groups, 4 teams in each group. One from Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4. Top 2 teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages, quarter final, semi-final and final. So in total, you play 7 games to win Sam. The bottom 2 teams from each group will go into the second tier competition. Same procedure as the Sam Maguire.

Yes, I know this means disbanding the provincials. But lets be honest, the provincials are dead, the only competitive province is Ulster (and even that is dying with the Farney/Tir connell duopoly). Dublin are only getting stronger every year with the financial clout they have. Once every decade someone might beat Kerry in Munster. And out west, there's nobody to challenge Mayo.
