Galway v Cavan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A win and we're in with a good chance of staying up. A defeat and we're more or less dead and buried. Have we any hope of beating Galway away? Tough assignment. I thought we'd rally after the Down game. I was wrong. The resolve in this team isnt what it once was. Questionable discipline too. It's all pointing towards a Galway win.

Sometimes we produce a performance when least expected, let's hope this is one of those times.
If we loose we have to depend on other results.
Here's hoping!!!

Can't see past Galway.
They score goals for fun and we don't score any. We won't score enough points.

to be fair Galway away would always be a tough match for Cavan in any era.At the start of the campaign, this would have been a game I would have written off. Remember 2011 under-21 final. they hammered us. They have some of those players playing senior now like Danny Cummins, Fiontain O' Corrain, sweeney and maybe a few more.actually it surprises me that not more of them are playing senior but then again Cavan will probably only have 3 lads from that 2011 team playing aswell (Gearoid, Niall McDermott and Feargal Flanagan with possibly Jack Brady) so it just shows it takes a while to progress and only a few make it every year. I have always admired the way Galway play football even in their less successfull times. Always had some class playersand now is no different.

It will be a good test for our lads. I know there have been alot of moaning about our style of play but I'm afraid it's not just us. some of the other games I have seen on TV this year were diabolical with the same lateral hand-passing . It is terrible to watch, especially when you are losing. We haven't been too far away in the games we have lost and played with 14 for a fair amount of time. we need to keep our discipline and not be stupid.Martin Dunne comes in for a fair bit of flack on here but at least he is usually good for a few points and they are a precious commodity in this team. if the right ball is played to him he can turn quickly and get a shot off which is something that others dont seem to be able to do.

The pluses going into the game are the low expectations of most supporters and the fact that the game is away from home. If the team can keep 15 on the field of play for the 70 minutes then a positive result can be obtained from the game.

Best of luck to the team!

It will be fair to say Galway will hammer us and what makes it worse is that it's a 12.45 kick off so those above us will know what they have to do. Another problem will be if Meath beat Laois Friday night it puts more pressure on us for to loose against Galway we will be firmly in the relegation zone with laois, if however Laois beat Meath Galway beat Cavan we will be bottom of the table this is terrible after the great start we had and the expectations. I stated at the start of the year that a good year would be to stay in Division2 and if we can achieve this I for one will be happy.

This is a game no one expected us to win at the start of the year so to some extent the pressure is off. I think our crunch match is the Westmeath game. That is a game we absolutely must win. 5 points might be enough to stay up and even if it isn't we would go into the final match with Meath with our fate in our own hands. Our recent record against Meath in Navan is actually quite good.

If we could actually beat Galway, promotion would still be a possibility depending on how other results pan out!

Not going to happen stop living in a fantasy world. My main worry right now is Laois beating Meath and Cavan loosing against Galway Cavan can say they are as much relegated if this happens for they are going to take nothing from Meath and maybe a point from Westmeath.
Please prove me wrong

What? That's daft to say the pressure is off. Fair enough if we had of taken 2 points from one of our last 2 home games then we'd be somewhat comfortable but a loss here and we're more or less buried.

As usual I can't see where the scores will come from. Ironically I think our best bet to beat them will be 15 men behind the ball. Galway struggle against it.

A result against Galway would merely paper over the cracks. Let me remind you kind people, Hyland is in his 4th year of managing the team, apart from a few wins here and there, the football has been abysmal, with this year being some of the worse I ever witnessed. Failing to score in the 2nd half v Tyrone - our forward line managed 2 pts from play against Kildare on Sat night, as for the Down game, dont get me started.

So please, if we do manage to beat Galway, it will be a welcome result, and we'll all be happy, but, please lets be realistic, a win against Galway does not mean that we are gonna win the All Ireland, it doesnt mean that Terry has brought the team on leaps and bounds and it doesnt mean that the #futureisblue.

Tomsmith here

Ned while I support some of your opening comments I feel that you are a glass half empty chap.
It would be better for morale if you were more positive and support the boys going out to face Galway.
As a poster that always liked to see our senior team doing well I was abhorred to see your negative post and I just waited to see who or when you would be challenged on it.
That I have done now on behalf of the people that support this team in good and bad days
So wise up and be more positive in future

Agree largely with you, but it's crucial we survive in this division. The only tangible progress we've made has been promotion to division 2. Hardly spectacular. But I think relegation would set us back perhaps irreversibly. 4 years of provincial winning underage teams and all we can muster is a relegation scrap in division 2. I think Terry will leave after the championship, whatever way it goes. It's obvious a new man is needed in there to shake things up a bit because I do think we have the players to compete in this division.

And that phrase has to be the most cringeworthy thing I've ever heard.

Until we change our ways and quit running with the hare and barking with the hound,Cavan football will always be in trouble.if the management and backroom team cared at all about Cavan football they would walk away and swallow their pride.move on.these things happen in life.

On another note.i hear that 1 more player has walked off the panel on monday night.

The negativity on here is beyond a joke. I don't know why some posters even bother supporting the team. If we lose to Galway we are not relegated. A win against Westmeath who we managed to beat last year leaves us in with a great chance of staying up.
And as for the style of play. Are Monaghan complaining after holding Donegal to 1-4 or Tyrone after holding Dublin to 1-9. Like most teams we don't have flashy forwards and need to cut our cloth to measure in order to win. Nobody was complaining when the under 21's were eeking out narrow wins with low scores. Now it's all doom and gloom and the glass half empty stuff.

Breffni Man - its not negativity, its people simply being realistic. As for Monaghan & Tyrone, they have the quality of players to play that system, we dont have the players and its plain for all to see. In fact, its actually worst that it was last year, because we've now started to leak goals.

We need to bring in fresh players, some more from both County Finalists would be a start, we need to adapt a system that suits us, and we need to bring in a new manager who actually knows what he's doing, and has a plan b, when plan A is no longer working.

Any ideas who left the panel Monday night?

With respect to the previous poster.
We play a negative brand of football, even the u21 success was built on parking the van.
5 u21 final appearances in a row , 4 wins and not one decent forward to show for it.
Poor return don't you think.
Lads leaving the panel ( even on good terms) is not good and doesn't instill confidence for team and fans alike.
Then again Laois looked dead and buried and pulled of a surprise against Roscommon.
Problem still remains, no strike force.
PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG.

The management need to swallow a piece of humble pie and go and get Keating, Tierney, Givney, Hayes, Tierney etc etc back into the panel otherwise Monaghan will hockey us in the Championship.
Better swallowing it now than after we are in Div 3 again and embarrassed in the Championship.

What do you mean humble pie. Those players left the panel of their own free will. Why would Terry have to eat humble pie. About time you copped yourself on.

It's obvious that the players who left don't like Terry's system and see the team going nowhere with that system.
It needs to change.
What other county lost so many players of late? I think you need to wake up and smell the coffee.
