Tried setting up a new thread for the McKenna cup but seems to be some sort of malfunction on the website, anyone else have the same trouble? Can the powers that be not sort this, there's football to be discussed :P

Anyway, team playing Down today,

James Farrelly, Joshua Hayes, Rory Dunne, Jason McLoughlin, Dara McVeety, Damien O'Reilly, Paul Smith, Gearoid McKiernan, Killian Clarke, Christopher Conroy, Barry Reilly, Martin Reilly, Ronan Flanagan, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Jack Brady

Good luck to the lads and new management. Some familiar faces who haven't appeared in a Cavan jersey for a while, Bud Fitz, Barry Reilly, Ronan Flanagan, Conroy. Good to have Killian back too at midfield, he will deputise well in Givney's absence. I see Argue and Sankey are with UUJ, played against Monaghan yesterday.

Looks like a good start to the season. first the under-21s beating meath well in the hastings cup and Today a good win over down for the seniors.

Nearly at full strength really bar martin Dunne and cian Mackey and maybe 1/2 others! Interesting no Gaels lads? Maybe the Co Champions aren't good enough! Only Terry and his ex gaels side kick will know the answer to that one!! Any best of luck to all involved in the coming season! Good result today!

It's the McKenna cup dirtybag a chance to experiment so an absolutely idiotic comment.

Dirtybag, have you ever said anything positive. Why does this forum and administration allow your constant attacks on good Cavan men like Terry Hyland. Cavan were missing Dunne, Keating, McEnroe, Mackey, Argue, Mounagh, Gilsenan and host of u21s and guys playing with there colleges. You are an embarrassment to yourself and your Gaels club.

Up Cavan.

Was in Newry yesterday, Very good workrate by the lads. Experimental team but early days. Some notable performances from Josh Hayes and Martin Reilly, Dara McVeety, Tom Hayes played very well when he came on, think he won all but one of the balls that went into him. Jack Brady lost 7 out of 8 balls that went into him in corner forward but when he went to half forward thought he produced a good display. Damien Reilly had a very good game at center back and set up a lot of attacks. DA lot of positives from yesterday without the regulars and under 21s.

looking at the paper today. I spotted a number of Cavan men on colleges team.
Conor Moynagh,Conor Madden (6 points). Padraig Faulkner and David Hyland, Michael Argue and Brian Sankey.
I am sure there were more. feel free to add to that list.

I was at the Dublin game yesterday and Faulkner was marking Eoghan O'Gara. O'Gara scored an early goal and he was then switched onto him but did a good job on him overall.

that's valuable experience for the Lad. maybe another possibility to add to the Cavan setup.

were we playing a defensive style football like last year? or was it more attack based?

Sammaguire it wasnt as defensive. When we attacked we did it quicker and committed a lot more forward. There was no extra man in defense but we did defend in numbers

Cavan 97, I like the sound of your report. Couldn't make it but looking forward to seeing more of what you describe.

It seems like Cavan were at the blanket defence set up again if you can go by the Down managers reaction.... Are we in for another year of puke football..????

Was the Down manager at the same game as the rest of us!? Down frequently had 13 men behind the ball. Cavan were much much more positive than Down. We scored 2-11 for God's sake. Sour grapes from a man trying to deflect attention from his own failings.

Nice to see the armchair fan above ready to give out about our style of football yet wasn't even at the game. How about waiting and actually going to a game and deciding for yourself before judging?

Only reading between the lines JonSmith so dont be getting too hot under the collar so early in the season.... I hope it was sour grapes from the Down manager...but if not an awfull lot of people will stay in those armchairs in 2015...

Sean66 there was no blanket defence nor was there a sweeper. Damien was centre half and it was 15 on 15. When down came forward our midfielders and half backs tackled and tackled well. Sure Barry Reilly dispossessed Down in the half forward line to set up our second goal. Down's Conor Laverty (corner forward) was helping out in corner back so Down were defending too. But for Jim McCorry the rest of his players didn't look as fit as our lads. For me Im booking my hotel for Galway. I love supporting this county and the effort that the guys put in I think we should do the same. I missed the Limerick game last year out of McKenna, national league and championship and if im gonna moan or give out about tactics or players then ill do it after watching them .

Cavan 97 where you at the game? There was no way it was 15 on 15. Roman Flanagan played as a sweeper. There no point in discussing anything with ppl who weren't at the match.

I think I'd believe JonSmith before I'd believe the Down manager. 2-11 speaks for itself any day. Let's hope it continues to develop and in fairness to the players it will take some time to move it on to a sharper level.

I'm a bit concerned to see Tom Hayes playing U-21 on Saturday and Senior on Sunday. Tom is a class forward but he needs to be allowed to develop his game, not burned off with two games in 24 hours. Isn't this what we were posting about a few weeks ago? These games are not important enough to merit this kind of player management.

Sorry Dirtybag to disappoint, I was there and didn't see Flanagan marshalling anywhere. No one played in front of Rory or Damien. so where was he sweeping?
