Ironic, because a top class free taker is something Cavan are lacking

Funny you should say that but Killeshanda's Declan McKiernan put away some quality frees in the intermediate championship last season he should give it a go. Frees from the ground are the way to go and he can do it.

Declan McKiernan is a fine player despite your post.

I posted this young mans name for I feel he is well capable of doing the business this is my opinion.
You say you cannot carry a free taker well the old saying is you can carry a free taker but you cannot carry a liability well with all due respect if you go back to when we won the Ulster Championship in 97 we up to that carried a free taker WHY for when he was hot he was hot and when he was bad he was very bad but he had my respect for he won many a match for us.
Declan is well able to mix it fella so no fear there and I hope he gives it a crack.
Is mise Sean O'Rinn

I think its an insult to say the team is "carrying" Declan mc Kiernan. Any game Ive seem him in this year for either club or county, I can assure you he was not being carried. As Sean said, he kicked some fine frees in the championship last year but his work rate during the game has to be commended.

I've yet to see Declan mck being carried on any team, best player in killeshandra and west cavan, along with Gearoid mck, intermediate player of the year last year and a starter on every cavan team from u-16 to u-21 even though he wasn't the main free taker. I don't think any player on the current senior squad should be insulted by suggestions of being carried and the fact that terry appears to have faith in 30+ players is a credit to the level of ability and competitiveness of each of the players. I suggest that in future if you want to dish out needless and unwarranted criticism to any of the lads who represent their county so well you do it somewhere else.

He also has a sigerson all star for playing in midfield wich is an amazing achievement for any player! One of the best midfielders in the county unfortunately not really being givin a chance to put his mark down for a regular place on the team!

I am not sure that your posts are being directed back towards me but if they are please read my posts I believe Declan is a fine player and well able to take care of himself. You will also read I believe that he should give the above a crack. Sean

I personally would rate Declan a better player then Givney. But in my opinion Cavans best pairing at midfield would be Argue and G McKiernan

Not directed at you Sean, I might not always agree with your postings but I know that you always give an honest opinion and express genuine interest in Cavan football, some people just come on here to be negative and criticise players for no reason. I can accept when posters try to analyse performances or games or players and say negative things within the analysis but making statements like stirringit did above with nothing to back it up is unfair on any player at any level.

Are these kicks from the ground...? If so there is very few players in Ireland worth sending there apart from Bryan Sheehan ( Kerry ) and a few goalkeepers... The fine art of freetaking is long gone thanks to another silly Gaa rule change brought in years ago... What do others think...?

The fine art of free taking off the ground verses the faster pace of frees from the hand...
I'd much rather the current position.
Remember frees can still be taken from the ground if desired.

I think if you look at any match with Declan playing for Killeshandra he took every free from the ground. You will find in their simi final he slotted home frees from as far out as the 65 mtr all from the ground and very important under pressure. He is an exceptional free taker and a great model to look up to for club and county. RESPECT

The winner of this competition has not come from one of the top counties over the last two years I am led to believe.
The player does not have to be entered by any club or county he can enter himself and if he reads this I hope he does give it a crack. P.S The length of time it takes for a goalkeeper to come forward and take a free there could be two or three scores got ridiculous. Even in hurling I am a Cork man and I don't agree with any goalkeepers coming forward to take any frees. But in this competition different story I suppose but good luck to Declan should he enter, he has my support.

I agree totally with you Seanoroinn but the only reason goalkeepers are comming up to take 45s and other frees is because they are the only team members who are used to kicking from the ground...this is a Gaa problem and I have the perfect solution to it if anyone in the Gaa are willing to listen to me...!!!!

So have I just like the underage had here in Cavan any free taken from the ground got two points if scored direct. I would however increase the distance for senior level any free from 35 meters or further scored from the ground would get two points that's a huge incentive don't you think.
Any 45 scored direct would get 3 points but should and can only be scored by an outfield player, if a goalkeeper takes it just one point.

Barry Reilly used to be a fairly handy free-taker (remember him ?)

I would not be inclined to tamper with the scoreing system we have Seanorinn....your idea may be needed at underage level to get freetaking from the ground back up and running... I dought many county players today could point a 30m free from the ground which is a crying shame... Every team club or county had a top notch free taker and they were a joy to watch... There is nothing worse than seeing a player 20m out takeing a free with his back to the goals or a half fit goalie takeing 5mins to trape up and attempt a 45...!! The free from the hand is still good for speeding up the game ie line balls, defensive frees and quick frees but should not be used for direct scoreing... Have I agreement out there...???
