Cavan v Monaghan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The league is over. Time to move on. In just under two months, we'll be taking on either Monaghan or Fermanagh. Win that game, and we will face either Down or Armagh in the semi-final. Given the way those two are going at the moment, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say we are effectively one good win away from a first Ulster final in 16 years. Realistically, we are going to be playing Monaghan in the last eight. Surely we are good enough to beat them. Big news today that Darren Hughes will miss the Ulster championship. Sorry for the lad, he's a great player but that is another reason to believe we can do this Cavan abú

Only thing is Monaghan have three good forwards now and Doogan a great carrier. We'll have our work cut out still. Hughes is a big loss though. He dominated midfield in league game.

2 good forwards. But yeah they're still dangerous.

I'd be confident Faulkner and Clarke could mark them tho with a sweeper in front cutting out easy ball in.

We're better than Monaghan across the rest of the field. But as we saw in roscommon, that guarantees nothing.

Can't see us winning this one.

Relegation will have battered the players confidence, especially after the total non-performance against a Roscommon team with nothing to play for.

Monaghan on the other hand have a few provincial titles collected over the past few years, they've held their own in the top tier of league football, and they seem to have unearthed a new forward in Jack McCarron to take the pressure of McManus. Plus they've beaten us in 2013 and 2015 in close encounters. They know more than anyone that Cavan crumble when the heat is turned up on them.

I think the best we can hope for is a run in the qualifiers, we just don't have the players in Cavan to challenge for honours.

That's the spirit!

Sure why bother playing the game at all, eh?

Cavan97. He might sound negative but Monaghan have better players than us and will be rightly favourites - thats why they are in DIv 1 for a number of years and we lasted only one. We can only hope that McGlennan comes up with a tactic which causes them problems. He did so many mad things during the league that its doubtful he has shown Monaghan our hand anyway!

For what it's worth, I think we have a good chance of winning this one if all goes to plan over the next 7 weeks. Don't think we should be afraid of Monaghan, The games in 2013 and 2015 were unbelievably tight while we should have beaten them in the league this year. Is it definitely going to be in Breffni or what's the story?

We need to play as a team, not as individuals. until we do that we will be forever inconsistent.

Oh sorry, did I offer some facts and realism? My apologies. I forgot most of the posters here don't harsh realities.

Killian Clarke has to be at fullback and Faulkner in midfield with Mossie.
We need to find a strong consistent player at No 6 McEnroe would be my shout.
Martin Reilly is the only player I have seen able to play sweeper intelligently .
Dillon is a mighty full forward when fed ball accurately. Unfortunately he rarely sees quality ball because of the glory hunters of the half back and half forward lines who usually kick the ball away or carry it into the tackle.
Mc Vitty has the makin of a centre half forward but needs to win and spray the ball around , he puts the head down solos and loses it and it has never been corrected.
There's a variety of4-5 players either started or came on in every game , all seem to have only half a game in them and seem to make no difference when they come on or go off. This needs to stop. Second half of Roscommon game in fact the whole team looked like they didn't know what to do.
Niall Mc Dermott is for me our best forward but sat on bench in league , where is he likely to get game time to be uulsterchampionship ready.
So plenty to work on. Mc Gleenan has had plenty of quality players at his disposal, question is does he know how to develop them, bring them on, build them into a team. Can't understand some players in panel ahead of Ray Cullivan, Martin Dunne, Turloc Mooney. I think his style of management and play has destroyed any half decent forwards we had. Take Geaney in Kerry , he is special but he is left on the edge of the square and ball got to him that's why Kerry won league. I was not the biggest fan of TH but in his last year he tried to develop more attackin football. But based on performance against Rossies , all that now looks to be gone. Hope I'm wrong but not lookin forward to summer.

Have you asked yourself why Niall McDermott was sat on the bench ???? Have you asked yourself or anyone why Ray Cullivan and Matin Dunne are not on the panel have you asked yourself why Turloc Mooney has not had game time maybe you might ask these players why and you might think before you start attacking the new manager. I am hoping come this time next year he will have established his own team of players and then fingers can be pointed if it goes wrong. I can see a major problem but it's not for me to say but I hope he twigs it sooner rather than later. Roll on 2018

I think you're over estimating the effect relegation will have on us. I'd hope the team would have learned a great deal from Division 1 and would have taken away plenty of positives to go along with the plenty to work on list. No reason why we can't be a better team from the experience.
I'd have to agree with you regarding Monaghan. You have to hand it to them, they are a fantastic bunch and look to be stronger again this year. They will be big favourites but they never get it easy against us. It will be a dogfight as per usual and if we can show a little more composure in the final stretch than previous meetings there's no reason why we can't finally get one over them.
Jury is still out on Mattie but he is not afraid to try new things and will have learned a huge amount. He might surprise us all yet. It's a pity Givney was not available this year to see how he would be used. Apart from him I don't see much merit in the other names of individuals being called for. If they're not pushing there's a reason.

of course they'll be everyone's favourites to win but that suits us just fine - we were favourites to beat roscommon and didn't.
The underdogs tag suits us and the favourites tag doesn't suit Monaghan.
It's always a close game between us so turning our attention to the qualifiers already is ridiculous. Keep their full forward line in check and they're very beatable.

Might not even be Monaghan. Fermangh are decent around midfield with Jones and Eoin Donnelly. Hughes will be a loss, though they should get through in Clones. Whoever gets through will have a game played, better then the long wait Cavan have.

Fermanagh are always a tough nut to crack but their forward play lets them down a lot. It will take something special from them to beat Monaghan and I'd be very surprised if they manage it. It's a pity because they are a fantastic team and always punch well above their weight.

Same crap different year...same lads spouting rubbish that we are better than Monaghan and we should be beating them. Lets no forget the failures of the last few years, and more importantly, the fact that we got relegated from Division one having been beaten by Roscommon, which coincidentally was their only win in that Division.

Give Monaghan the respect they deserve, they've won an Ulster Final in recent years and have held their own in Division One for a few years, so they deserve the title of being favorites. Cavan have done and won nothing in years, so lower your expectations and get your heads out of the sand.

Until Hughes got injured I was planning on backing Monaghan for Ulster. Not so sure now.

Yeah definitely. I'd still be hoping we put it up to them providing they beat Fermanagh. Should be a humdinger of a game.

Right lads, as expected, it's Monaghan. Three weeks to get ready now for what I believe is Cavan's most important championship game since the summer of 2013. The three seasons since that successful summer were not good enough at all, and if ever it was time to deliver on the 'future is blue' nonsense, now is surely the time. Beat Monaghan and we really should be getting to the Ulster final. What's the feeling?
