Future of the game - Media , Black Cards etc

(Oldest Posts First)

Anyone else think media have far too much of an unhealthy influence on the game and some of the pressure they are heaping on managers is very insidious to say the least . See Terry made a comment about the negative comments regarding our style . I don't know if you'd call it a snipe but it's worrying to think media could dictate how teams should play and get inside managers' heads .
The black card rule to me is not the way to go regardless of what the statistics say . The manner in which it was brought in is also very wrong . Seemed to be largely driven from one particular section of the media and the views of the majority of those actively involved in the GAA were ignored . Anyone with valid points against were mainly shouted down . What happened in Portlaoise was predicted by many last year . Referees have been given an impossible job and once the senior championship proper gets underway it's going to get worse . I hope those who hailed it as the saviour of the game and welcomed "open football" were watching this weekend . From that evidence we are looking at even more emphasis on possession football . A running , possession and non contact sport . Give me a battle any day . Will the powers that be be as decisive in pulling the plug on this experiment as they were with implementing it , if that is what is in fact needed ? Wouldn't hold my breath .

Good post. Referees have a very tough job now with so many rules and different interpretations of the red, black and yellow cards. I predict mayhem in the championship with this black card rule. The black card was largely driven by Cavanagh's pull on McManus last year, one incident caused uproar. Very simple solution, give him a red card. Show a player a red if he deliberately hauls down a player in a one on one goal-scoring situation.

A black card is useless against the top sides. It will crush the weaker sides in comparison, who do not have the strength in depth of the likes of Dublin.

I think the black card is a brilliant idea and it will show why later on in the championship. It's not difficult to understand it and you have the option to send on another player provided you have not used up all your subs. I personally welcome it and it allows for a more open game no pulling players down when they are getting by you. I am in favor of it for this reason alone.

That's the problem, I said it already, it won't hurt the strong team, it will have disproportionately negative effect on weaker sides. What do you think?

Well Ned_Stormcrow if we are not strong enough we are wasting our time. The county team we have want to succeed in the Cavan Jersey and if the black card effects them because they are too weak well then management are going the wrong direction that being the case. I hope not.

That's the problem , it is difficult to understand . People are saying referees should be accountable but they have been given an impossible task . The only ones accountable are top brass - that's their job!!!
They've added another layer of confusion to an already grey area . I'm afraid referees are going to get these calls wrong time and time again . I think it's farcical that video they made with their definite examples of black card offences , then they add but it's open to interpretation! Plus one of the examples they give was actually given the other way by the referee .
The game in Portlaoise had 3 black card incidents dealt with by the referee and he got all three wrong . Doesn't fill you with confidence going into the summer . I also think it's very detrimental to have players afraid to tackle . Defence is part of the game as is physicality . Momentum alone should not be enough to round a player .
It's wrong to keep landing everything on the shoulders of the referees , they deserve a bit of help from above but top brass constantly pass the parcel every time . The appeals process is a joke with good refereeing decisions being constantly undermined . Sort this out and maybe look at an accumulative penalty system for picking up reds and yellows . This would require someone putting themselves out though so will not happen . Easier to dump it on the referees door and hope everything blows over once the game is over .
We'll see how it pans out but I worry that even if mayhem ensues we'll still get the comical Ali approach from above that all is well .
