What can we do to improve Cavan Senior Football

We are probably at our lowest ebb for many years and with us relegated, out of the championship, relaying on some average players I just wonder has it donned on the Cavan Public how serious the situation is in County Cavan GAA
If it is agreed ( and we can live in denial) that he have reached alow ebb then we need urgent remedial action
What remedial action is needed I am unsure off. Underage Coaching, has to be one of the prime moves.
I have to ask what happened to our U21 winning teams
As I said I don't have all the answers do you?

Tom,

You are living in the glory days of years long ago. The sad fact is that Cavan are no longer a power in the GAA (if you leave handball out of that).

It will be 20 years or more before we win another Ulster title make no mistake.
Ramor, Cavan Gaels and Castlerahan have the strongest teams in the county yet we are made up of a majority of junior and intermediate teams.

I should also mention Kingscourt as another of the stronger teams in Cavan.

We need to go back to scratch, hold open trials for those who want to play for Cavan, Cut out the poor players gradually for want of a better word and then see where we are at.

If we keep playing players on reputation and names and holding on to panels of previous years we will go nowhere fast.

Time to start again .

your sincerely

PATRICK MCCABE (COOTEHILL)

It is very sad that since I posted this message that not one suggestion has been posted by the Gaels of Cavan. Bit hitters who in the past supported the Clip Board men and thought that the were our saviours have remained silent. We had two great home grown managers one who took Tyrone to a replay in 2016 and another who resigned after a late Goal . Both of these men put a lot into GAA in Cavan. Both knew Cavan football and one took us up a Division each year. Both could in be utilised in some manner
Let the Gaels of Cavan now come up with views on how to get our top players on to the County panel. Is any footballer out there that has not been tried. What about Divisional teams ?? I am only prompting your minds. What about a senior winter development squad ?

The whole system has to be reviewed in the county Tom. What are the biggest problems in Cavan football at the moment? In my opinion there needs to be a few radical changes before Cavan ever start competing on an Ulster Level again - before we start thinking about a national level.

1) The County board needs to be refreshed every 3 years - I know there is a change at the very top table every few years but every dog on the street knows that the same faces are always there influencing the decisions of the top table. guys who have given their service to Cavan Football and credit to them but it's time to move on. Time to get a younger representation at top table who are more in touch with the modern game.

2) The Fixtures Committee. Every Club in the county has a gripe with it and always has. The fixtures committee never seem to listen. In my opinion the Cavan Championship must start earlier. It gets our best players in Championship Mode - at a level of intensity and fitness that no training can buy. Obviously this is not at an intensity and fitness level of county games but combined with county training surely there is no substitute. Most other counties including the successful counties start their club championship before the inter-county championship. Why are we different? We must model our future on the Tyrones, Dublins, even Monaghan.

3) Parish Teams - For the future of the game in our County we must plan to amalgamate our parishes down the line. It will prove very difficult and won't be short of arguments but it will improve the standard of club football in our county and with that comes an improved County Team. People must swallow their pride and amalgamate for the future of our game in County Cavan. Look at the standard of underage football in the county at the moment in most clubs - atrocious is being nice.

Just three opening ideas to mull over...

Agree with No 1.
No 2 well isn't the fixtures committee already made up of club members?
No 3.. you got to be joking. Why would teams for example and it's only an example like Cavan Gaels want to amalgamate with either club in their parish???????

Junior and intermediate teams should be allow amalgamate to play in the Senior championship.
Think we had it in the 70s with st Mary's , Woodford Gaels and Annagh.
16 teams straight knockout.
And it was the 70s where a Cavan club contested the Ulster club final and the county team contested 2 Ulster finals.
So it would raise the standard.and give juniors and intermediate a taste of Senior football.

CAVAN GAELS amalgamate with Killygarry and Drumalee? This wouldnt be fair as only Martin Reilly would make the team from Killygarry and I cant see anybody from Drumalee that would make the current Gaels team. No disrespect intended to either team.

But Shannon Gaels and Crosserlough lads can make it so you never know.

And who's place on the Gaels team would Martin Reilly take?
He wouldn't get on their half back line not in their forwards?
He wouldn't get on it simply because they play fast attacking football and that is not his style

You are in a fantasy world for sure. What ever about Drumalee, Killygarry have some quality players for sure and a lot of young lads with plenty potential. I would think that Killygarry would want nothing to do with either of you to be honest. We will get a chance tonight to see how spectacular your team the Gaels are tonight. I look forward to watching this match so Jason needs to make no changes from the starting 15 unless a black card or an injury say's otherwise.

Mr Rinn.

Name me a player from Killygarry apart from Martin Reilly who would make the Gaels ''starting 15'' . Majority of Gaels bench would start on any other club team in Cavan. By the way I hail from Cootehill but

THATS BECAUSE THEY TRANSFERRED WITHIN THE LAWS OF THE GAA IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY?

ITS FUNNY THAT TEAMS LIKE CASTLERAHAN AND RAMOR HAVE GOT AWAY WITH THE "LEAGUE OF NATIONS" TAG IN RECENT YEARS.

IM PRETTY SURE THATS BECAUSE THEY WERNT WINNING NUMEROUS CHAMPIONSHIPS LIKE THE GAELS WERE .

STILL LEAVES A SOUR TASTE IN SOME PEOPLES MOUTHS IT APPEARS.

To number 2..as far as I know it is the CCC who comprise the fixtures. Does the CCC have a representation from every club-I'm not sure but its not representation thats the issue it is in fact the structure of our fixtures. So there has to be a structure in place for our fixtures-there is not at the moment in my opinion. Whilst trying to protect our county players we are
actually effecting the performance of our county players at an inter county level. Again we have to mirror the successful counties on their fixture structure in my opinion

Cavan Gaels is a tough one-you are right but i feel this is the only exception due to population and squad size alone. You say this is just one example? Would you like to provide me with another viable one? amalgamations need to happen at some level to make our club football better. If you know anything about underage football at the moment you will understand that. An example and this is just one example but aclub the size of ballymachugh not able to field a minor team so transfer their 4 players to their neighbouring parish for the time being? Is this really ethically correct?

I am sure you will get to see them for yourself when you meet them if it draws that way. Not too many of your team have made the county team thats a bit strange isn't it considering you have the best team in the country. It will be great to get A senior Ulster title this year then and the All Ireland in March it will be great for the county. Get down from your dream boat before it sinks. In fairness winning the senior county at this moment in time is not hard BUT I am sure Mr Keogan and Mr Sheridan have different ideas as to what direction Oliver Plunkett is going.

Within the rules of the game for sure . Not the point though. The point is its getting to the point that clubs need their fellow parish cubs. Numbers are decreasing and our underage club football is poor. Join them up, get them competitive, get them winning and winning breeds success.

I'd definitely be of one parish one team. Maybe the Cavan town one be too strong but likes of Maghera Munterconnaught etc...

Gaels stay by themselves, killygarry and drumalee join. Clubs should join, more money to run good clubs, better standards of football, better county team, clubs doing better in Ulster, time to bury the past and create our future, we are all blue at the end of the day.
