Cornafean club notes

Looking forward to seeing you all at THE GALLANT 5KM/10KM CHALLENGE: In aid of St Christopher's Hospice Cavan takes place on Saturday 28th October 2017. This event will start and finish at Mc Seains Bar Cornafean and will be marked out and stewarded along the route to guide you along the way to whichever distance you decide to participate in. Main sponsors are MacManus Pharmacies Cavan, O'Neill's Pub and Shop in Redhills and Garry Smith from Smith's Catering in Ballyconnell. Over the previous 13 years the Challenge has been an outstanding success raising €367,000 for this wonderful cause. There will be loads of surprises and craic on the day and it will be a fantastic day for the family. Entry fee on the day to participate in the Challenge is voluntary. Anyone wishing to donate to this very worthy cause can do so by leaving donations in the Village Foodstore Crossdoney. All donations are greatly accepted.

Scór na nÓg: Dates for first round of Scór na nÓg are 10th, 11th, 12th November with Cornafean competing on Sunday 12th November in Killeshandra. County Final will be held on Saturday 18th November 2017, practice is underway.

 

Sports Person Award..Congratulations and well done to our very own Amy Wharton who received the Sports Person Award from Cavan Institute on Friday last. Well done Amy.

Cornafean Bowling Club ...Practice continues every Tuesay night at 8 p.m in the community centre. New members always welcome.

The late Michael Fay...Sincere sympathy is extended to Mary Young, Drumgoon and her family on the death of her brother Michael Fay. His funeral took place in Killeshandra last week.

Congratulations..to local girl Laura Duignan who recently passed out as a member of An Garda Siochana at Templemore Garda Training College. Laura is daughter of Patsy and Eithne Duignan, Coronea. Laura was very involved in the local Cornafean Club taking part in Scor for many years and also played football with the Cornafean Ladies . We wish her well in her new career.

Ballinagh Comhaltas...Ballinagh Comhaltas will host a Fundraising Concert in the Shantully Inn, Crossdoney on Friday night next 20th October at 8 p.m. in aid of the County Fleadh next year. There will be a host of artists on the night and a session will take place afterwards. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Ulster Junior Championship Semi Final....Best of luck to the Cornafean Senior Ladies on this Sunday as they take on the Devenish Club from Co. Fermanagh in the Ulster Junior Championship Semi Final. This is a great achievement for the girls to get this far and hopefully they can make it through to the Ulster Final. Unfortunately due to the weather conditions, times and venue have not been decided at time of going to press. Please check Facebook and Club texts for updates later in the week.

Death of Canon Brian McNamara...We remember Canon Brian McNamara whose funeral took place on Friday last 13th October. Canon Brian served as a curate on tow occasions in the parish in coronea in 1956 - 1961 and in arvagh from 1973 - 1983. May he rest in peace. More to follow next week.

CLUB NOTES

U10 Cathal Brady Memorial Cup...Well done to the cornafean U10 Footballers on their great win in the Cathal Brady Memorial blitz played in Crosskeys on Saturday morning last. Teams from Denn GFC, Lavey, Laragh, arva and Killeshandra also took part so it was a great acheivement for the cornafean team to come out on top.  Team: Conor Morrow, George Cullivan, James Flood, Sean McFaul, Diarmaid Martin, Daragh Wilson, Jamie Leathem, Ryan Sheridan, Rian Millman, Lorcan Sheridan, Dara Gould, Cian Halton, Eadaoin Martin, Niamh McCaffrey. Thank you to Ciaran Martin and Philip Wilson for all their hard work and coaching. A big thank you to the Brady Family and Denn GFC for their hospitality on the day.

Underage Ladies...It has been a great week for the underage ladies with the U11 and U15 girls both wining their respective championship sem finals over the weekend. We wish them the best of luck in the finals this weekend. U11 girls will take on Cavan Gaels in the final and the U15 team will take on Bailieboro. Unfortunately due to the weather, times and venues have not been decided at time of going to press. Please check Facebook and Club texts later in the week for update.

Minor B Championship...Hard luck to our Lough Oughter Gaels Minors Cornafean/Butlersbridge as they were narrowly defeated by Kingscourt in the Minor B. Championship playoff game. The game was played on the 3G on Friday night last. Final Score Lough Oughter Gaels 1 - 13 Kingscourt 1 - 17.
