Cornafean club notes

May 22, 2017

The Late John McCormack,
Another link with the great Cornafean football teams of the past, died last week with the passing of John McCormack of Lahard. Aged 83 John had been in failing health for some time so his death was not unexpected. He was one of a family of eight born into a family steeped in Gaelic Football. Together with his brothers Frank and Gene he was one of the pillars of the Cornafean team for many years. However he will be best remembered for his 'Man of the match' performance at centre back in the 1956 senior final when Cornafean won the title against all the odds. He was also an honorary President of the club at the time of his death.

He was a farmer by trade and was also well know as an excellent gardener. He was a quiet gentle man and a good Neighbour. Cornafean footballers past and present formed a guard of honour at his funeral and his coffin was draped in his favourite no 6 jersey. He will be sadly missed by his only remaining sibling Nan Farrelly his nephews, nieces and extended family. His funeral mass was in St Brigid's Church Killeshandra, Fr Oliver O'Reilly was chief celebrant assisted by Fr Colm Hurley and Fr John Phair. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Reserve League Division 2 ..Cootehill 4-12   Cornafean 1-9
Hard luck to the Reds who made the trip to Cootehill on Sunday afternoon to play the locals and unfortunately came out the wrong side of a 4-12 to 1-9 scoreline.  This was the teams last match in the Reserve League and next up for the lads will be the Reserve Championship which will commence in late June.
