Cornafean club notes

March 27, 2017

Well done to Eamon Maguire, local Storyteller who was part of the Nyah Comhaltas group who performed before a huge crowd in Breffni Park on Sunday last prior to the thrilling clash of Cavan V Kerry in the Allianze football league.  Eamon recited "The Greatest of the Gael" which was very appropriate for the occasion as it recalls the many legends of our football games over the past 50 - 60 years including Cavan and Kerry greats.  Eamon as usual delivered his Recitation with great passion and energy and the rapturous round of applause from a packed Breffni Park bore testament to this.

Trath naGceist Ulster Champions
Well done to the Cornafean Team of Michael Dinneny, Brian Doyle, Tommy McGibney and Rita Martin who were recently crowned Traith na Gceist Ulster Champions in Armagh recently.  This annual event run by the Ulster Council is a very competitive Quiz competition delivered through Gaelige and teams from Cornafean have been successful in this event on a number of occasions.  Also best of luck to the Cornafean Table Quiz team who on this Thursday night 30th March will take part in the County final of the  Scor Quiz competition in the the Hotel Kilmore at 8 p.m.

Arva/Killeshandra/Cornafean Community Games….Congratulations to our swimmers who won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the County Finals on Saturday! Daniel Madigan won a Gold and qualified to represent Cavan in the National Finals.  Lauren Miney won a silver, James Miney won bronze and their sister Laura was also swimming fast in her first County Swimming Finals but just missed out on a medal.  Overall a very successful day for the swimmers.

CORNAFEAN CLUB NOTES

Cornafean GFC hosted two significant football matches in Pairc Naoimh Fionnan on Saturday last.  The Cavan minors played Armagh in the first match and then the Cavan U17 Development squad hosted Down later on.  On a fine day for fooball our club grounds were looking resplendant and there were many nice compliments from our visitors.  Well done to all.

Club Membership. To play games, take part in competitions and club activities one must be a member.  Membership for 2017 closes on Friday March 31st.  Contact P. Gormley (086) 3827151.

Reds Ladies....Well done to Kelly Johnson and Jemma Wilson who are part of the Cavan Minor squad and they got their Ulster Campaign for 2017 off to a winning start on Saturday last with a fine victory over Down.  Also well done to the Cornafean Senior Ladies who made the long trip to Shercock on Sunday morning last to play the locals in the 9 a side league and the girls made the trip worthwhile with a good victory over Shercock.

Best of luck to Aine Brady and the U16 Loreto ladies in their All Ireland Colleges A Football Final due to be played on this Friday 31st in Banagher Co. Offaly.

Denn Defeat Reds...The Reserve Reds got their league campaign up and running on Saturday evening last when they entertained Denn in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain but it was the visitors who came out on top after an enjoyable match of open and free flowing football.  A youthful reds team gave a very good account of themselves against a very strong and experienced Denn side but the concession of three quick fire goals just before half time proved to be a bridge too far for the gallant Reds.  Cornafean fought bravely throughout the second half and a goal and a point from James McGahern brought Cornafean to within 4 points of the opposition with 10 minutes left on the clock but an immediate major from Denn killed the match as a contest.  Final score Red 3 11 Denn 7 11.  Team P. Cosgrove, E. Brady, B. Sheridan, S. Doyle, C. Briody, G. Olwill, C. Sheridan. J. Martin, J. Cartwright, A. Smith, J. McGahern, D. Cullivan, C. Cullen, Sub A. McSeain.

Well done to the Cavan Senior ladies who continued their good form in Division 2 of the league with a good victory over Sligo.  Also to the men on their magnificent effort against Kerry, if their shooting boots had been on the first half maybe the result could have been even better, but the lads have given a great account of themselves in Division 1 of the league and hopefully if things work out this weekend players and supporters will have another season in the top tier to look forward to.
