The Championship B finals were played on Sunday last August 31st in the 3G pitch Breffni Park.
First up was the Breffni Mushrooms Senior B Championship Final between Knockbride and Mullahoran, with Mullahoran running out the winners on a scoreline of 5-11 to 6-13. This game was as entertaining as the scoreline suggests. The game started at a frantic pase with both teams really up for it. Both teams matched each other score for score but it was last years Intermediate winners Mullahoran that were the most effective in front of goal. Knockbride had the chances but will probably feel a little disappointed not to have taken them. The game was there for both teams to win but Mullahoran were better in final thrid which ultimately proved the difference as they came away with a 5 point victory. Mullahoran's Kate Smith was announced as the Breffni Mushrooms Senior B Championship Player of the Match.
The second game of the afternoon was The Kiernans Service Stations Intermediate B Championship Final between Ballyhaise and Lavey. Ballyhaise emerged victorious on a scoreline of 4-6 to 0-4. Ballyhaise started this game the stronger racing out of the blocks with player of the match and captain Sinead Moore driving them on. Ballyhaise looked comfortable and while they kicked some great scores and a couple of fine goals, they had the chance to win by more but Lavey to their credit kept battling away but never really troubled Ballyhaise as they ran out easy winners.
The last game of the day was the Quinn Building Products Junior B Championship final between Cornafean and Cavan Gaels. This was the first final at adult level for Cavan Gaels and they almost made the perfect start with two early goal chances only for Conafean goalie Aoife Miney making two excellent saves. It took a while for Cornafean to settle into the game but when they did they took complete control and saw them as winners of this B final. But on this historic day for their club, the Gaels never gave up and battled right to the end. But it was the experienced Cornafean who regained their title after a fine overall performance. Cornafean who won this title last year and found themselves in the final for the third year in a row running out convincing winners on a score of 8-16 to 0-4.
Apart from the B Championship finals we had the small matter of Inny gaels v Killygarry in the Kiernans Service Stations Intermediate Championship semi-final. The game was played in Kilnaleck and was the last of the championship semi-finals. Killygarry got off to the perfect start as county minor Courtney Rapell-McDowell struck an early goal and this was the early cushion Killygarry needed as they went in at the break six points up. Despite an early second half point from Killygarry it was Inny Gaels who started best with a few early scores to find themselves only 4 points behind. It was at this point Killygarry introduced former Ladies All Star Grainne Smith.
It was her introduction that started to swing the game in Killygarrys favour. As Inny Gaels regigged their team to free up Nessa Byrd to mark the former county star. Indeed it was a point from Grainne Smith and Niamh O Shea that increased Killygarrys lead to seven points. At this stage Inny Gaels started to probe the Killygarry defence for goals. But the defence marshalled by unsung sung hero Gemma Cullen held strong. Inny Gaels were to get one opportunity as a goal chance fell to former county player Ciara O'Reilly but her effort was deflected wide. It would be a 45 that Inny Gaels got there final point of the game as Killygarry ran out six point winners.
Killygarry now progress to The Kiernans Service Stations Intermediate Championship final against Drumlane at 2pm next Sunday September 6th in Kingspan Breffni Park.
In the Quinn Building Products Junior Championship Final we see Drumgoon take on Kingscourt in the first game of the day at 12pm.
Last year's senior finalists Lacken and Lurgan will do battle again in the Breffni Mushrooms Senior Championship Final at 4pm.
Best of luck to all teams.
