Cavan manager Terry Hyland believes that the commitment being demanded of intercounty footballers is unsustainable.
As the Lacken clubman prepares the Breffni County for Sunday's Ulster SFC clash with neighbours Monaghan, he told The Irish News that something, somewhere is going to have to give:
"I think the amount of time intercounty players have to put in at the present time is probably unsustainable; it can't be sustained into the future.
"Maybe it's okay if you're a student at 23 or 24, but we would have lost professional people who just couldn't commit themselves to it because of the nature of their job, the after hours and all that.
"I suppose it's the price you have to pay to make progress at the highest level but it can't be sustained, in my view. I think it's a case of having to look at the fixtures and see how they can be compressed to suit these fellas and make the year shorter.
"I think the whole issue of what's being asked of intercounty players has to be looked at. Otherwise, we won't have all the players that we want making themselves available to us."
