New Child Protection Officer

The new Child Protection Officer for Cavan County Board is Anne Fortune. Cavan Gaels club is delighted and honoured that Anne has accepted the position. It's a very important and specialised role to which Anne will bring knowledge and experience having held a similar position in our club. Anne is a very active and valued member of Cavan Gaels and we wish her well in her new post.

Cathal Young RIP
The death occurred recently of Cavan Gaels stalwart Cathal Young. Cathal was closely associated with Cavan Gaels from its foundation in 1957. In his playing days he won senior league medals with Cavan Gaels in 1958, 1960 and 1962. He captained the 1960 team. His proudest moment was lining out in the 1965 senior championship final against Bailieboro and being a part of the panel of players who brought the first senior championship title to Cavan Gaels eight years after the club was founded.
When his playing days were over and although domiciled in Dublin, Cathal maintained his intense interest in Cavan Gaels. He took pride in all the club's achievements over the years. He relished in particular the club's three senior championship wins in the seventies. And of course he was ecstatic over the recent golden era of championship successes at minor and senior levels. He attended almost all those games.
Cathal over the years supported many of the fundraising ventures of the club, in particular our previous lotto. He looked forward to travelling from Dublin every year to participate in the club's annual golf classic at which he could renew old club acquaintances.
Cathal Young never forgot Cavan Gaels. We, in Cavan Gaels, will always cherish his memory. He was truly an inspiration to the next generation of Cavan Gaels. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

We urge others who have not joined so far to consider signing up in the knowledge that, by so doing, they will be making a significant contribution, not only to the Terry Coyle Park development, but to the long term development of our young boys and girls.

Mental Health

Thanks to the club members who attended the talk last week in the Hotel Kilmore on Mental Health and Wellness by Dr Claire Hayes. This was a very informative talk which, among other topics, discussed how players react to victory and defeat,  how alcohol so often features after victory and defeat and how important it is to have an equilibrium and see the bigger picture as we react to everything that life throws at us.

The HSE has launched a new mental health initiative called Little Things. It has a five point plan for good mental health which includes advice on keeping active, talking about your problems, looking out for others and drinking less alcohol. Alan O Mara, Cavan GAA player, has urged people to get involved with this initiative. On the same subject the GAA has developed a pack called Play in my Boots in partnership with St Patrick's Mental Health Foundation which is aimed at all who play sport. This pack can be downloaded from the website gaa.ie  People are reminded that there are many resources available dealing with mental health. Use them if you feel the need to. Help is always available. Let's take the stigma out of the subject of mental health. It's ok to say you're not ok.

The Freecall number of the Samaritans is 116 123.
