Cornafean's Brian Doyle

Last weekend saw Cornafean veteran Brian Doyle hang up his boots after nearly three decades of service to the club at senior level.

Doyle, who was 17 when helped Cornafean to a reserve league title back in 1986, repeated the trick last Saturday night when the Reds overcame Kill Shamrocks' challenge in the Reserve Division Three Championship final by 1-9 to 0-6.

The 45-year-old played out the entire hour at centre-field, adding a championship medal to the junior gong he won back in 2000 when his was part of the team which captured the Sean Leddy Cup, and he confirmed to The Anglo-Celt afterwards that it would be his last game for the club.

"It was a last hurrah, it wasn't the Sam Maguire now. But it was my last day out anyway," said Doyle.

"Absolutely, in any footballer's ideal world wouldn't it be lovely to quit football after you win a championship! And certainly when you're 45. I was 17 in 1986 and we won the reserve league - it was the first thing Cornafean adult men had won since the won the senior championship in 1956."

Saturday also saw Cornafean lose another veteran in Liam Young, who was also on the 1986 panel, and is a month older than Doyle.
