Cavan Gaels club notes

October 28, 2014

Division 1A

Our seniors, fresh from last week's victory against Ballinagh in the senior league, had an away encounter with Lacken on Sunday last. This was a game dominated by a strong wind. High scoring was the order of the day with Cavan Gaels emerging winners by seven points having been behind by seven at half time. As a result of these two victories we have secured a semi-final spot. Well done to all concerned.

Ulster Club

Our seniors have an away game against the Derry champions Robert Emmetts GAC  Slaughtneil in the Ulster club championship on Sunday November 9. When we won the St Paul's minor tournament in 1999 we defeated Slaughtneil, managed then by Dermot McNicholl, in the final. Patsy Bradley, current Slaughtneil midfielder,  played at midfield for his club in 1999 and his direct opponent that day was Dominic Reilly, current Cavan Gaels midfielder. Best of luck to our players and management as they prepare for their Ulster campaign. Ní neart go cur le chéile. Is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.

Mental Health

The HSE has launched a new mental health initiative called Little Things. It has a five point plan for good mental health which includes advice on keeping active, talking about your problems, looking out for others and drinking less alcohol. Alan O Mara, Cavan GAA player, has urged people to get involved with this initiative. On the same subject the GAA has developed a pack called Play in my Boots in partnership with St Patrick's Mental Health Foundation which is aimed at all who play sport. This pack can be downloaded from the website gaa.ie  People are reminded that there are many resources available dealing with mental health. Use them if you feel the need to. Help is always available. Let's take the stigma out of the subject of mental health. It's ok to say you're not ok.
