History: three female referees to officiate at Croke Park finals

September 11, 2014

Referee Maggie Farrelly.

History will be made at Croke Park on TG4 All Ireland Finals day as, for the first time, the referees for all three TG4 Ladies All-Ireland Football Finals will be female.

Maggie Farrelly from Cavan will take charge of the TG4 Senior All Ireland Final between Cork and Dublin. This will be Maggie's second time taking charge of a TG4 All-Ireland final although it will be her first at senior level as she has previously refereed the 2007 Junior final between Kilkenny and London.

Mags Doherty from Wexford will be in charge of the all-Ulster TG4 Intermediate Final between Down and Fermanagh, Doherty last took charge of an All Ireland Final in 2011 when she refereed the Junior final replay between New York and Wicklow.

Cavan will have a second referee on duty on TG4 All Ireland Finals day as Yvonne Duffy referees the meeting of New York and Wexford in the Junior Final for the second time having done so previously in 2011.

Speaking about the appointments LGFA president, Pat Quill, said: "We are delighted that, for the first time, all three referees in the TG4 All Ireland Finals are female. All three referees have been chosen on merit and all three have been operating at the very highest level of the game for the past number of years. I would like to wish all three referees and their teams of officials they very best of luck on September 28th in Croke Park."
