Cavan Gaels club notes

August 25, 2014

Two-Day Fun and Games Festival

Cavan Gaels held a two-day Fun and Games Festival for boys and girls aged 7-12 in Terry Coyle Park on Tuesday 19 August and Wednesday 20 August from 10-2. This festival of sport which included football, camogie and rounders, was very successful. Thanks to all those who organised this inaugural event. A word of thanks in particular to all the club coaches who helped out. Míle buíochas.

Senior Championship

Our seniors have been drawn against Cuchullains in the next round of the senior championship. This game will take place on Saturday next in Virginia at 6pm. Best of luck to them. Please support.

Sports' Capital Grant

Cavan Gaels has been awarded €110.000 in the latest Sports' Capital Grant scheme. We thank all those who in any way contributed to the application or helped in any way to expedite the granting of this money. Thanks to all those who have already joined the Friends of Cavan Gaels and in doing so have made a very important contribution to our club's development plans. We would encourage those members, at home and abroad, who have not joined so far, to consider joining the Friends of Cavan Gaels.
We are glad to report that work has commenced on this project.

Minor Championship

Hard luck to our minors who were very narrowly defeated by Naomh Bríd (Drumalee/Redhills/Butlersbridge) on Tuesday last in Drumalee in a very entertaining and sporting game of the highest standard. We got off to a flying start and raced into a four point lead. By half time scores were even. The second half was well contested with the lead changing hands several times. With full time approaching the Naomh Bríd goalkeeper converted a 45 to guarantee victory for his side. Our next game in the competition sees us pitted against Bailieboro. Well done to our players, the vast majority of whom are under-age for minor football next year.

All-Ireland Junior Final

Well done to Paul O Connor and Niall Smith who lined out for Cavan in the All-Ireland junior final victory against Kerry in Portlaoise on Saturday last. Cavan's only previous victory in this competition was in 1927 when they defeated Kildare 0-7 to 1-3 in Bréifne Park. That victorious team included Cavan Slashers players Tom Crowe, Louis Mallon and Andy Conlon.

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to Isabella Corrigan, wife of the late Frank Corrigan, and to his son and daughters. In his latter years the late Frank became an avid supporter of Cavan Gaels. Despite ill-health he insisted on attending as many Cavan Gaels matches as possible.  He and Mick McCarthy sat beside each other on special seats at those matches following the fortunes of the club.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Mark Reilly and his wife Ciara Fay who were married recently. Mark was a playing member of Cavan Gaels for many years.

Camogie

Cavan Gaels camogie training takes place on Mondays and Thursdays at 7.30pm and on Sunday mornings at 10am in Terry Coyle Park. New members very welcome.

Under-10 Boys

Congratulations to our under-10s who won the annual Colm Curry Cup recently. Well done also to the players and their coaches.

Camogie Under-age Blitz

Cavan Gaels held an under-age camogie blitz on Thursday 7 August in Terry Coyle Park. This was a very encouraging and enjoyable occasion. Congratulations to all the players and coaches who took part and to those who organised it. Comhghairdeas.

Cavan Gaels Tornadoes

Coaching for the Cavan Gaels Tornadoes, where the emphasis is on having fun, continues in Terry Coyle Park on Saturday next at 11am. Thanks to all those who have helped in any way with the launch of the Cavan Gaels Tornadoes. A particular word of thanks to all the coaches who turned up at the launch and who have continued to do so on Saturday mornings from 11.00-12 noon. Thanks also to all the parents who continue to attend and offer their help. New boys and girls always welcome. Rud an-thábhachtach é go mbeimid ábalta freastal ar an óige i gcónai agus go luífidh baill an chluib isteach ar an obair bhunúsach seo.

Under-age coaching up to the age of twelve takes place in Terry Coyle Park every Saturday morning at 11am.
