Cavan Gaels club notes

July 21, 2014
Division 1A

We met Kingscourt in the senior league on Sunday morning last. From the start the visitors were more motivated and soon raced into a lead which they never relinquished. We had our purple patches but did not consistently sustain our efforts.

Under-16

Our under-16s hosted Southern Gaels (Lacken-Gowna) on Thursday last in the championship. This was a well-contested game. We were hampered by the absence of a number of key players. The visitors ended up deserving winners.

Girls' Football

Congratulations to our under-13s who recently kept up their winning ways by defeating Drumgoon at home and Killeshandra away. Comhghairdeas.

Gerry Reilly Tournament

Best of luck to Luke Fortune who will line out with the county under-16s in the final of the Gerry Reilly tournament in Oldcastle.

Cavan Gaels has been awarded €110.000 in the latest Sports' Capital Grant scheme. Thanks to all those who have already joined the Friends of Cavan Gaels and in doing so have made a very important contribution to our club's development plans. We would encourage those members, at home and abroad, who have not joined so far to consider joining the Friends of Cavan Gaels.

Cavan Gaels Tornadoes

Coaching for the Cavan Gaels Tornadoes, where the emphasis is on having fun, continues in Terry Coyle Park on Saturday next at 11am. Thanks to all those who have helped in any way with the launch of the Cavan Gaels Tornadoes. A particular word of thanks to all the coaches who turned up at the launch and who have continued to do so on Saturday mornings from 11.00-12 noon. Thanks also to all the parents who continue to attend and offer their help. New boys and girls always welcome. Rud an-thábhachtach é go mbeimid ábalta freastal ar an óige i gcónai agus go luífidh baill an chluib isteach ar an obair bhunúsach seo le tréan-díograis. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad.

Under-Age Coaching

Under-age coaching takes place in Terry Coyle Park every Saturday morning at 11am.

Under-12

In the summer league, our under-12s are in the same division as Castletara, Denn, Knockbride, Drumlane, Mullahoran, Butlersbridge and Dernacrieve Gaels. We played Butlersbridge on Monday last and after a very competitive game they emerged victorious. Well done to all our players for their commendable endeavours.

Goalkeeping Camp

A goalkeeping camp took place in Terry Coyle Park recently, facilitated by the current Tyrone goalkeeper Niall Morgan. The clinic covered the following: warm-up, positioning, handling, kicking, shot stopping and all the other roles of a modern goalkeeping. That includes free-taking! The first camp took place from 10am-12 and the second from 1pm-3. Over thirty goalkeepers took part in the camp and they were very impressed by the camp contents provided by Niall Morgan. Déanaimid comhghairdeas le Niall O Riordan, eagarthóir an champa.

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to the wife and son of Alan Coyle and to the extended Coyle family on the recent sudden death of the former Cavan Gaels player. Alan was a gifted gaelic footballer whose displays adorned many of the Cavan and Ulster GAA playing fields in the nineties. He lined out with Cavan Gaels teams which won the following under-age titles in an unprecedented successful era for the club: Community Games All-Ireland winners 1992; under-12: 1994,1995; under-13: 1996; under-14 league: 1995,1996,1997; under-14 championship: 1997; All-Ireland Féile na nÓg: 1996 in Mayo and 1997 in Donegal; under-16 league: 1997, 1998, 1999; Under-16 championship: 1998, 1999; minor championship: 1999. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
