Bailieborough Shamrocks Club Notes
July 15, 2014
Reserve Championship Div 1B
Bailieborough entertained Cootehill in the group stage of this competition on Friday night last in St Anne's park. As both teams had already lost to Killygarry this was a straight forward knock out game with the winners progressing to the next stage and the losers making their exit from the competition. Cootehill were slight favourites as they had given a good account of themselves against Killygarry whilst Bailieborough were well beaten by the same opposition. Despite a good start Bailieborough found themselves behind by a goal and a point to 1 point after 10 minutes, however Damien O' Reilly scored a fine opportunistic goal to restore the balance. The Cootehill attack was troubling the Bailieborough defence at this stage but the backs gradually got to grips with their opponents as the half unfolded. Meanwhile the Shamrocks forwards were finding gaps of their own and some well taken points left them leading by 3 at the break - 1- 6 to 1-3.
In the second half Christopher Dunne and Darren Brady continued to edge the contest in the middle of the field and with a good supply of ball the forwards responded well. One of the attacks saw them breach the visitors defence for a second goal which was finished to the net by Michael Clynch. This was an apt reward for the veteran forward who had provided leadership for his younger team mates throughout. With the O' Neill brothers in good form and Gary Daly working hard the Shamrocks forwards kept the scoreboard ticking over aided by 2 nice efforts from Marcus Clarke at wing forward.
The final whistle saw the Shamrocks ahead on a scoreline of by 2-1 2 to 1- 6 a result which keeps their championship hopes alive. The senior team manager Barry Mc Ardle was pleased with the win as it keeps the full squad of seniors and juniors in training and no doubt some of these young players will give him food for thought before the upcoming Intermediate championship.
