Everyone welcome.

Cemetery Sunday

Cemetery Sunday will not be publicly celebrated this year, however, each grave will be blessed by the priest in the coming weeks.  It is important to maintain family graves and to remember that cemeteries require year round care by our workers.  Thanks to everyone who has used the Cemetery Envelope to support this work.

Cornafean GFC Walking Track

The finishing surface was laid on the clubs walking track during the week completing the recent upgrade of facilities in and around Pairc Naomh Fionnan.  Well done to the Club Development Committee on their foresight and planning and to everyone who carried out the excellent work, culminating in the walking/running track being a beautiful facility to enjoy for all the community.  Please continue to access the grounds via the small gate, use the hand sanitizer and the one way system while walking or exercising.  Exit via the main gate nearest the road.

Thank you to all members and patrons for your continued support.

Football Update

Despite a great team effort Cornafean fell short by a goal to Drumlane in the second game of the 2020 Intermediate Championship.  They matched their opponents all over the park in tough and uncompromising encounter but it was the Drumlane men who proved more decisive and clinical on the scoreboard.  Well done to the Senior Ladies on their championship victory over Munterconnaught/Mountnugent amalgamation on Sunday morning in Cornafean.  They were  behind throughout the game but produced a storming last quarter to eventually run out 4 pt winners.  Both teams will be in championship action this coming weekend and we wish players and management the best of luck.

CLUB NOTES

Ladies Intermediate Championship

Cornafean 3-11   Mountnugent/Munterconnaught 3-7

This was a hard fought and entertaining encounter between two evenly matched teams played in Cornafean on Sunday morning last.  The visitors were quicker out of the blocks with a number of early scores to race into an early lead.  An opportunist goal from Amy McIntyre and a converted  free from Amy Wharton brought the Reds back into the game.  Ashling Gilsenan who was pulling the strings for the amalgamation side hit a rasper to the net from 20 metres but an improved last 10 minutes of the half from the Reds saw great points from Amy Wharton and a brace from Aoife Young   to leave it Reds  1-3 to Munterconnaught/Mountnugent 1-5 at the break.

The visitors were at it again early in the second  half with the first two points with an Amy McIntyre score keeping the Reds in touch.  Shortly after when the Munterconnaught/Mountnugent ladies bagged their second major of the game and went 6 points in front the alarm bells were ringing for the Cornafean girls. In  fairness they never say die attitude of the Reds coupled with some impact substitutions helped the team to play their best football in the last quarter of the match. Cornafean swarmed up the park with the opposition tiring and an Ashling Smith goal sandwiched between A. McIntyre and A. Wharton points had the Reds back in the game.  When sub Sarah Cullivan hit the net and Deirbhile McCaffrey kicked two in a row the tide had turned in favour of the home team. Points followed from A. Wharton, A. Smith and A. McIntyre with Mountnugent/Munterconnaught hitting a late penalty to the net in the dying moments of the game to leave a final score of Cornafean 3-11 to Munterconnaught/Mountnugent 3-7.

Well done to the players and management on a hard working performance and a deserved championship victory.  Next up is a tough fixture away to Bailieboro on Sunday net in Bailieboro and best of luck to the girls.

Senior Men Intermediate Championship

Cornafean 1-13  Drumlane 2-13

This was a typical tough championship encounter between the Reds and the men from Milltown.  With fast flowing football, hard tackles and some great scores there was loads to enjoy for both sets of supporters in Bawnboy on last Saturday evening.  The Reds dominated possession for long periods in the first half and would have been disappointed to have not added more to their first half tally of 7 pts with some great scores from Adrian Caffrey, Jack Traynor and Cormac Cullen.   There was no doubt the Reds to a man were working very hard all over the pitch but Drumlane showed how dangerous they were on the counter attack bagging two quick fire goals mid way through the half.  The Reds maintained their momentum early in the second half with some good points and when  Jack Traynor got his fist to a ball and register the Reds only goal it was game on with about 10 minutes remaining.  Drumlane held their nerve and a number of late frees which brought them over the line to victory.

Scores

J. Traynor 1-4, A. Caffrey 0-3, C. Cullen 0-4, J. Wharton 0-1, A. Wharton 0-1.

Team

Andrew Smith, Shane Doyle, Mark Johnston, Niall Corcoran, Dan Wharton, Jason Miney, Ciaran Duignan, Andrew Wharton, Cormac Cullen, Dean Kilkenny, Conor Sheridan, Jack Wharton, Jack Traynor, Niall Sheridan, Adrian Caffrey.

Subs.  Cullain McSeain, Liam Duignan, Pete Hogan and Barry Doyle.

Next up for the Reds are Cuchcullains this weekend.  Wishing the team and management the very best of luck.
