Ulster U20FC: Donegal, Tyrone and Down join Antrim in last four

February 22, 2020

Donegal, Tyrone and Down join Antrim in the Ulster U20FC semi-finals.

Donegal needed penalties to get the better of Monaghan, while there were also wins for Tyrone and Down in today's rescheduled Ulster U20FC quarter-finals.

Aaron Doherty, Eric Carr and Caolan McGroddy netted to give Donegal a 3-1 victory in the shootout after the sides had finished level at 2-9 to 1-12 after extra-time in Ballyshannon.

Doherty also goaled in the 24th minute to give the hosts a three-point interval advantage which was wiped out by a Gary Mohan major shortly after the restart. Aaron Mulligan then edged Monaghan in front before a fortuitious Ethan Harkin goal restored Donegal's lead with five minutes of normal time remaining. However, two late Mulligan points forced extra-time, 1-11 to 2-8.

Extra-time produced just a point apiece before Donegal prevailed on penalties.

Holders Tyrone made light of Ryan Jones' dismissal late in the first half to beat Armagh by 1-9 to 0-8 after extra-time at the Athletic Grounds.

With Tiarnan Quinn and Eoin Woods in fine scoring form at either end, the sides were level on 0-3 each at the interval before the hosts resumed with three unanswered points, including two from captain Justin Kierans, to double their lead.

But with half-time substitute Darragh Canavan beginning to make his presence felt, Tyrone edged back in front thanks to a cheeky Quinn goal in the 50th minute. However, a late James McCormick levelled the scoring at 0-8 to 1-5 and sent the tie to extra-time.

Restored to 15 players for the additional 20 minutes, Tyrone scored four unanswered points per Quinn, Neil Kilpatrick, Antoin Fox and Conor Quinn to book their place in the last four.

In the day's other quarter-final at Kingspan Breffni, Down saw off Cavan by 1-11 to 0-8 after leading by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break. Dean Rice, Cathal Gorman and Shelan Johnston were the scoring stars for the better-balanced winners.

Down will now face Donegal, while Tyrone will take on Antrim - who defeated Derry by 1-9 to 2-4 last night - in next weekend's semi-finals.
