Cuchulainns joined Butlersbridge in the semi-finals of the intermediate championship yesterday afternoon by edging out Killeshandra with 0-14 to 1-10 victory in Kilnaleck.
Late points from Adam O’Reilly and Evan Doughty made all the difference for the Mullagh men as they saw off a staunch effort from the Leaguers to set-up a semi-final date against the winners of next weekend’s quarter-final replay between Bailieborough and Laragh.
Niall Lynch’s team looked in complete control after mounting up a 0-7 to 0-1 lead 23 minutes in but a Daniel Luby penalty brought Killeshandra right back into contention and at the half there’d be a score in it (0-9 to 1-3).
Adrian Maguire’s men outscored their counterparts by 0-3 to 0-1 in the opening minutes of the restart to make it a one-point game before a brace of Conor Smith points steadied the Cuchulainns ship.
The 2013 winners plucked away and brought the margin down to one again with four minutes remaining but ex-Cavan minor O’Reilly conjured a sweet point prior to Doughty’s free deep in injury-time sealing the deal.
Saturday’s clash between Belturbet and Mullahoran finished in a 1-13 apiece draw in Ballinagh, where proceedings were held up by almost an hour after a nasty knee injury to Dreadnoughts defender James Reilly.
Mullahoran had led by 1-5 to 1-4 at the break but these two contenders were never separated by more than two points throughout the second-half and it finished all square, with the winners of the replay now set to face Butlersbridge in the semi-finals after this evening’s draw in Drumalee.
