"We want to play an attacking brand of football"

Cian Mackey of Cavan scores a point despite the tackle of Monaghan's Ryan Wylie

Cavan star Cian Mackey says the Breffni men are keen to maintain their attack-minded style under Mattie McGleenan.

It wasn't all that long ago that Cavan were famously dubbed the "Black Death" of football by RTE pundit Joe Brolly for their defensive style but the Blues have since evolved, with Mackey their chief playmaker over the past few seasons.

A win against Roscommon on Sunday will ensure McGleenan's charges an immediate return to Division 1 and the Castlerahan man isn't envisaging a different style of play when they visit Dr Hyde Park.

"We want to play an attacking brand of football. That's the way the game has gone," he told The Irish News.

"You have to be able to attack and kick scores and Mattie backs every man to be able to kick the scores. We had something like 11 or 12 lads who scored against Cork and 10 scored against Down.

"We're fairly confident if anyone's within 35 metres they're confident of kicking a score. It's a good way to be. In terms of a sweeper, it's all about honesty when we're defending.

"If there's a space to be covered and you see it, you have to get it. If you're not willing to do that there's no point in playing for Cavan."
