Huge Wembley win for former Carlow minor hurler

Grimsby Town's Padraig Amond celebrates

Former Carlow minor Padraig Amond starred on the Grimsby Town side that achieved glory at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Full forward on the Carlow minor hurling side that contested the 2006 Leinster MHC final against Kilkenny at Croke Park, as well as an All-Ireland quarter-final against winners-elect Tipperary, he played up front on the Mariners side that defeated Forest Green 3-1 in the Conference promotion final to secure promotion to the Football League.

The ex Naomh Brid clubman - who also played gaelic football for Ballinabranna - is joint top scorer for Grimsby this season, having found the net no fewer than 30 times. And he'll be back at Wembley this weekend as Paul Hurst's side bids to complete a non-league double by winning the FA Trophy final against Halifax Town.

Amond follows in the footsteps of men like Kevin Moran and Niall Quinn as GAA exports to go on to play at both Croke Park and Wembley.

After debuting for Shamrock Rovers in '06, he had spells at Pacos De Ferreira in the Portuguese top flight, Accrington Stanley and Morecombe before securing a switch to Grimsby, who return to the Football League after a six-year spell in the wilderness.
