Carlow manager Turlough O'Brien will have to plan without the services of Brendan Murphy for the Leinster SFC as he is heading stateside.

The IT Carlow student, who returned to the county fold during the recent FL Division Four campaign having opted out in 2014, informed O'Brien last week that he would not be able to commit to the Barrowsiders this summer.

"He's a big loss," the manager said to The Irish Times, "he was between two minds whether to go but he has to earn a few bob too and that's the economic reality of it.

"He's given excellent commitment to Carlow this year and he's trained hard, but he's a student and it's an opportunity for him to go out there and work and earn a few bob.

"Brendan's a top class midfielder and we're not flush with that quality of player here, but we have received a massive reaction here this year and I'm sure someone will fill the gap."
