IT Carlow are out of the Fitzgibbon Cup after all following this 1-15 to 0-14 defeat to Limerick IT in dreadful conditions at Moylish this afternoon.

Davy Fitzgerald's LIT, who host the semi-finals and finals this weekend, will face UL in an all-Limerick semi-final on Friday afternoon.

Today's hard-fought encounter went ahead after Mary Immaculate College's appeal against the Carlow college's continued participation in the competition was dismissed by the DRA this morning but their run came to an end in a game of two halves today.

The winners led by 1-9 to 0-5 at the break, having played with wind advantage. David Reidy fired the only goal of the game past Conor Clancy in the 20th minute on his way towards a match-winning 1-8 haul.

Limerick IT midfielder Alan Dempsey was shown a straight red card a minute from the break, while the losers had Cha Dwyer dismissed for a second yellow in first-half injury time.

It's been a miserable four days for Dwyer, who also picked up two yellows and a red in action for Laois against Waterford in the national league on Saturday night.

DJ Carey's team fought their way back into contention in the second half but knew their goose was cooked when Ian Byrne's 55th-minute penalty was saved.
