Fitzgibbon quarter-finals off after successful IT Carlow appeal

IT Carlow

Today's Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-finals have been cancelled following IT Carlow's successful appeal against the decision to throw them out of the competition.

DJ Carey's charges had beaten Eamonn Cregan's Mary Immaculate by nine points last week to secure a quarter-final spot but an appeal by the Limerick college against the eligibility of part-time business student James Gannon was upheld by the Comhairle Ardoideachais hearings committee.

Mary I were subsequently given IT Carlow's place in the last eight against DIT but it was announced at 2am this morning that the Central Appeal's Committee had ruled in favour of IT Carlow and overturned the decision by Comhairle Ardoideachais to award the fixture to Mary I.

That means today's scheduled quarter-finals - Limerick IT v Waterford IT and Mary I v Dublin IT - have now been postponed.

A statement issued by the GAA reads: 'Following the decision of the Central Appeals Committee to uphold IT Carlow's appeal and overturn the decision to award the Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup fixture between IT Carlow and Mary I (February 10) to Mary I by Comhairle Ardoideachais (CA), the Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup Quarter-Final fixtures which were scheduled for Thursday 19 February are now cancelled.

'Details of the revised remaining Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup Quarter-Final fixtures will be circulated ASAP'.
