IT Carlow thrown out of Fitzgibbon Cup

IT Carlow

The DJ Carey managed IT Carlow have been thrown out of the Fitzgibbon Cup after being found guilty of breaking the rules by fielding a part-time student.

An appeal by Mary Immaculate College against the eligibility of IT Carlow business student James Gannon has been upheld by the Comhairle Ardoideachais (CA) Hearings Committee.

The Ballyragget native is enrolled on a part-time course which makes him ineligible to play for the IT under CA bye-laws.

Carey's charges beat Eamonn Cregan's Mary I by nine points last week to secure their quarter-final spot and scoring difference decided Group C with WIT coming out on top and Carlow in second spot.

Mary I finished third on the table but, as a result of this afternoon's ruling, they have been reinstated in the competition as group winners.

They will face DIT at home in a quarter-final on Thursday while IT Carlow have three days in which to appeal the ruling.
