Anthony Rainbow has stepped down as Carlow football manager.

The former Kildare star has decided not to extend his stay after his two-year term ended with last month's All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Clare. The Barrowsiders had earlier suffered a crushing 28-point Leinster SFC quarter-final loss to Meath before bouncing back to beat Waterford in the first round of the qualifiers.

Rainbow failed in his attempt to win promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz League during his two years at the helm.

In paying tribute to the Suncroft clubman, Carlow chairman Michael Meaney said: "I would like to thank Anthony for his total commitment to the squad and to Carlow over the past two years, results may not have gone our way but it wasn't for the want of trying on Anthony's part. He is a very genuine guy and a true gentleman and I wish him all the best in the future."
