Leinster club hurling champions Mount Leinster Rangers suffered their first Carlow SHC defeat in three years last weekend.

In a year that has thrown up a few surprises at club level, most notably Dr Crokes' reign in Kerry coming to an end after five years, Mount Leinster Rangers suffered a defeat to Naomh Eoin in the senior hurling championship.

It was St Mullins who last inflicted a championship defeat on MLR as they came out on top in a group game back in May 2011.

However, this time around, Naomh Eoin produced the goods to record a merited 1-10 to 0-06 win over the All-Ireland club finalists.

MLR manager Tom Mullally admitted to the Carlow Nationalist that the Myshall outfit were worthy winners on the day.

"Naomh Eoin were better. It's as simple as that. The scoreline doesn't lie. He added: "They worked very hard and put pressure on us. They were organised. They came wanting to win the game and that was in evidence right from the start."

Despite the defeat, Mount Leinster Rangers are still very much in the mix for a knockout place in the championship as the group stages continue.
