Carlow footballers look set to be without influential midfielder Brendan Murphy for the remainder of the year.
The former Aussie Rules star has been unable to give the commitment to Anthony Rainbow's charges so far this year due to his Irish Army duties.
However, it was hoped that Murphy would return to the fold ahead of the Leinster senior football championship, but a six-month tour of duty looks set to put paid to the Rathvilly clubman lining out in the Carlow jersey this year.
Speaking to the Carlow Nationalist as he picked up the Irish Army Footballer of the Year award at McKee Barracks, Murphy stated that it was unfortunate that he could not line out for the county, although he will still play for the club when he can.
"I would like to be in there, but at the moment I can't," said Murphy. "It looks as if I'm heading away for six months and in the situation, I'm happy to be just playing football with Rathvilly."
