St Mullins manager Willie Coogan may have just seen his side defeat Ballinkillen in the SHC, but he stressed that there is plenty of room for improvement.

A 2-19 to 1-16 victory was the defending champions first win of the campaign having drawn their opener against Naomh Eoin.

With just four teams in the Carlow senior hurling championship, every team is assured of a semi-final spot, but Coogan still believes that they need to improve if they are to defend their title.

"I think it is a long way off as there are a lot of things to work on," Coogan told the Carlow Nationalist when asked his thoughts on the performance.

"From a scoring perspective 2-19 would go a long way to winning a championship match. We left a lot of scores out there too which were available to us."
