Knockbeg College caused a bit of a surprise in the opening round of the Leinster Colleges SFC when they defeated St Patricks College Navan at Pairc Tailteann.

The home team got an ideal start when Padraig Finnerty finished to the Knockbeg net after good work by Aaron Lynch. The Carlow College hit back with three unanswered points, two from the very impressive Ronan Curran and one from midfielder Jamie Lunney.

Lynch reignited the Pats challenge with a fine point and when Aodhan Mallon and Alan Mulvanney added to their total, Colm O'Rourke's charges seemed to be on the right road. The visitors had other ideas and finished the half with another three unanswered points through Curran, Martin Moloney and Josh Lacey to send the teams in level at the break, 1-3 to 0-6.

Knockbeg dominated large periods of the second half. By the 45th minute, the team in Blue and White hoops were in front 0-11 to 1-5 thanks to a trio of fine efforts from Curran. Lynch hit a brace for the home side to narrow the gap but with ten minutes remaining centre forward Killian Horgan was allowed to race through from midfield to find the back of the Pats net. Dylan Keating and Lynch traded scores with Curran and Horgan in the closing stages but the day belonged to Knockbeg College.

Knockbeg College scorers: Ronan Curran 0-7, Killian Horgan 1-1, Josh lacey 0-2, Martin Moloney, Jamie Lunney and Conor Nolan 0-1 each.

St Pats scorers: Aaron Lynch 0-6, Padraig Finnerty 1-0, Aodhan Mallon, Dylan Keating, Alan Mulvanny and Brian O'Hanlon 0-1 each.
