Mayo's AFL export Pearce Hanley is facing surgery after dislocating his shoulder twice in successive months.

The 29-year-old from Ballaghaderreen - who has been based in the AFL for a decade - picked up the latest injury during Gold Coast Suns' clash with Fremantle in Perth, having also dislocated his shoulder against former club Brisbane Lions in March.

In light of Hanley's unsuccessful comeback, the club's General Manager - Football Operations, Jon Haines, told the Alpha Sport Injury Update that the defender has flown back to the Gold Coast and will meet with a surgeon in the coming days:

"Pearce has had a scan - he's gone back to the Gold Coast and we've met this morning with the medical team as well and had some further discussion around the results of the scan. It's not a great result for Pearce, but in that context, we'll be meeting with the surgeon in the next few days to assess our options.

"But surgery is looking as the likely option at this point in time."
