Mitchell praises the team spirit
July 18, 2008
Westmeath might well have walloped Wicklow during the league campaign but the twice Christy Ring Cup winners were sent home from Arklow on Saturday last having tasted a rare defeat at this level, a result that delighted John Mitchell who contends that there is great spirit in his side.
"There is great spirit in the squad, they are game for it and this is one of our better performances," the manager said. He acknowledged that the visitors were the better side in the opening period of the game and displayed a better first touch.
"Westmeath had played in the Leinster championship this year; they beat Dublin last year. So they were playing at a higher level, at a higher grade than us and one would expect them to be better. But as the game went on we matched them and afterwards in the dressing-room Johnny Dooley admitted that Wicklow were the hungrier of the two sides."
