Masterson keen to seize moment
July 16, 2008
Wexford goalkeeper Anthony Masterson insists that Jason Ryan's charges aren't going to Croke Park for Sunday's Leinster SFC final against Dublin to "make up the numbers".
Despite being unbeaten so far this year, the Slaneysiders are given little chance by the bookies to halt Dublin's bid for a fourth successive provincial success. However, Masterson - in his first season as Wexford number one - is convinced they can upset the odds.
"It's a dream to be playing in the final, but I'm not looking forward to the occasion, I'm looking forward to going up there and winning. We're not going up there just to put up a performance and make up the numbers," he said.
"To get to a Leinster final is great. But once you are in it you might never get there again. We have to make the most of it."
The 25-year-old, who had been understudy to John Cooper for four years, is full of praise for Jason Ryan who has made a massive impact in his first year as manager.
"He has done a lot of coaching and a lot of work over in Australia and America and London, so obviously that's paying off for him. And it's showing now with Wexford.
"I was around with Ger Halligan, Don Twomey and Pat Roe. They were all brilliant managers as well and the same with Paul Bealin. Jason is young and he's only out of playing, but he knows what we are all about and he knows what it takes.
"Some people might say he's too young to be manager, but he has brought the team to a different level and brought so much confidence into the panel."
