Wexford Board to launch investigation next week

July 16, 2008
Officials from the Wexford County Board will launch an investigation into the abandonment of an Under 21 club championship match last Monday evening at Piercetown. The meeting of Buffers Alley and St Martin's in the Wexford Under 21 championship ended prematurely as a melee between players, substitutes, mentors and supporters from both sides erupted ten minutes from time, forcing match referee Justin Heffernan to abandon the game. Heffernan was then allegedly chased by a number of the Buffer Alley players, livid as they lead the game comfortably by 11 points before its abandonment, to his car where he escaped safely. The chaos continued on the pitch and spilled into the dressing rooms with order eventually being restored when the Gardaí arrived on the scene. Wexford chairman Ger Doyle has said that time for an investigation into the incident will be scare as the Model County's footballers prepare for their first Leinster SFC in 52 years but admitted that a probe into the events at Piercetown on Monday is certain to take place next week, with the referee's report from the game due to be with the County Board in the coming days. Both clubs could face being excluded from the Under 21 championship this year, which was the case between Portlaoise St Joseph's and Barrowhouse last year in the Laois Under 21 championship when violent scenes marred that match and forced its abandonment.
