Championship fixtures pile-up
July 11, 2008
Wexford's involvement in both the Leinster Senior Football and Hurling Championship finals this year have brought a major headache for the County Board as they are struggling to get championship games played within the county.
Newly-appointed chairman of the Competitions Control Committee in Wexford, Derek Kent, is hopeful that over the coming weeks some of the fixtures can be seen through but has cited several reasons for their postponement to date.
"We did not start the senior championships in May as we did not want an eight-week gap between first and second round games. We also had been requested by John Meyler and Jason Ryan to have May free so they could concentrate on preparation of the senior sides for the championship, while Jason also wanted the May 11 weekend for a break in Donegal for his side.
"We had senior games fixed for this week but Colm Morris on behalf of the footballers had been in contact. I told him we were playing the games and a decision on fixtures was up to the County Board. Colm told me they would not play either hurling or football with their clubs before the Leinster final," said Kent.
A special County Board meeting took place last Monday night about the issue and clubs voted 10-1 to call off games.
