O'Donovan Rossa GAA Notes
June 26, 2008
The O'Donovan Rossa senior footballers' championship aspirations ended for another year with a disappointing third round defeat against Duhallow last Saturday night in Macroom.
Skibb started in lacklustre fashion conceding the opening three points of the game within the opening five minutes. Skibb's hopes of a revival were hampered by their inability in front of goal as they meekly shot four wides in a frustraing opening ten minute period. Conor McCarthy opened the Skibb account in the 13th minute with a fine point before Brian Dwyer converted from a close range free to reduce the margin to the minimum after the first quarter.
Skibb's hopes of a victory were dealt a cruel and unfortunate blow with the enforced loss through injury to experienced campaigners Niall McCarthy snr and Donal O'Sullivan. Their withdrawals affected Skibb in a seismic fashion leading to a loss of concentration and focus before half time. Duhallow added three points prior to half time with Skibb's solitary score coming from a Brian O'Dywer free to reduce the arrears to three points.
Skibb started the second half in rejuvenated fashion taking the game to their illustrious opponents and pointing three points from frees to close the gap to a point with a quarter of the game remaining. Gearoid Murphy and Conor McCarthy from a free traded points for their respective outfits to leave a point between the teams with twelve minutes remaining.
The Skibb revival came crashing to a halt in spectacular fashion in the closing stages with a lack of fitness and winning mentality amongst the players evident and culpable in thwarting their bid for a notable victory. Duhallow inspired by inter county player Donncha O'Connor notched up 1-5 without reply to emerge deserved winners on a 1-13 to 0-7 scoreline.
