Galvin and Kane to learn fate

June 24, 2008
Kerry captain Paul Galvin and Down assistant manager DJ Kane will find out later today if their appeals against proposed six-month suspensions have been successful. Both men appeared before the Central Hearings Committee in Croke Park on Monday night to challenge their respective bans. Galvin was banned last week for knocking the notebook out of referee Paddy Russell's hands during Kerry's Munster SFC semi-final win over Clare, while Kane received his suspension after he was deemed to have contravened the conditions of his previous 16-week ban - which expired a fortnight ago - by giving a team talk during Down's recent drawn Ulster SFC quarter-final against Tyrone in Omagh. Both Kane and Galvin will take hope from a recent case involving Longford selector Eugene McCormack who had a similar ban successfully reduced to three months by the same committee. McCormack was reported by Tyrone referee Michael Hughes for alleged minor physical interference after Longford's Leinster SFC defeat to Westmeath on May 11, for which he received a six-month ban from the CCCC. But he successfully fought to have it reduced by half. Kerry GAA chiefs have confirmed that they will defend Galvin all the way to the Disputes Resolution Authority in a bid to have his ban reduced. That means if his proposed suspension if upheld by the Central Hearings Committee, he will then proceed to the Central Appeals Committee and to the DRA if necessary.
