O'Donovan Rossa GAA Notes
June 19, 2008
The O'Donovan Rossa junior A footballers played out an uninspring draw with Clonakilty in their second round championship encounter played in Rosscarbery last Saturday evening on a 0-8 points apiece scoreline. The game started tentatively with both defences on top in the early stages. Skibb were guilty of slow and predictable approach play with their forwards as a result starved of good quality ball. Skibb registered the opening scores of the game with Jurgen Werner converting two placed balls in the opening quarter.
Clon with full forward Colin O'Donovan to the fore, began to gain a stranglehold on the game scoring three consecutive points to establish a one point lead after twenty minutes. This subsequently proved to be the only time Clon held the lead for the duration of the game.
Skibb finished the first half stronger notching three succesive points through Ger Minihane whose pace and willingness to run at the Clon defence provided a valuable attacking option in the first half, Jurgen Werner and John O'Sullivan to enable Skibb to hold a two point lead at half time. Clon started the second half with renewed poise and purpose with Colin O'Donovan unerring from set pieces. Rory O'Donovan reinstated Skibb's two point lead before Colin O'Donovan levelled proceedings shooting two points with a quarter of the game remaining. John Hodnett made an immediate impact when introduced as a second half substitute and Colin O'Donovan, traded points for their respective sides before Liam Hazel struck a close range point to give Skibb a narrow lead.
Clon applied frantic pressure in an exciting climax and clinched a deserved draw when Colin O'Donovan pointed from a 45. The replayed encounter is schedueld to be played in Rosscarbery, on Sunday, June 29, at 3.30pm. Team: Damien Long, Shane Keohane, Martin Bohane, Richard Hodnett, Niall McCarthy, Shane Crowley, Ger Minihane, Donal O'Sullivan, John O'Sullivan, Eoin Hodnett, Dermot O'Sullivan, Donal Óg Hodnett, Rory O'Donovan, David O'Keeffe, Jurgen Werner. Subs used: Colm Keohane, John Hodnett, Liam Hazel and Liam Swanton.
The third round senior football championship clash against Duhallow has been scheduled for this Saturday night, June 21, in Macroom at 8pm. Skibb who defeated Ballincollig in the first round face a formidable task against a physically strong and imposing Duhallow outfit who can call on the services of intercounty ace Donncha O'Connor. The winners of this clash will progress to a quarter-final encounter against the victors of the Dohenys v Na Piarsaigh game.
Conor McCarthy was introduced as a substitute in the final quarter for Cork in last Sunday's Munster football championship semi-final clash against Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds. Conor helped Cork to stage a late comeback for a narrow victory thus cementing their place in the Munster football final against Kerry, which is scheduled for Páirc Uí Chaoimh on July 6.
There was no winner of the lotto draw which took place in the Horse and Hound Bar last Monday night for e11,500. The numbers drawn were 18, 20, 21 and 22. The consolation prize winner was Mary Hurley. Next week's lotto draw will be held in the Paragon Bar and will have a jackpot of e11,750.
