Big Leitrim support expected in Gaelic Park
May 08, 2008
An estimated 2,000 Leitrim supporters are travelling to New York for Sunday's Connacht SFC opener against the Exiles at Gaelic Park.
Such is the interest in the game in the Ridge County that the local banks have struggled to keep dollars in stock.
Leitrim PRO Brendan Doyle said: "We have a bigger crowd going now than when we went out there in 2003. There is huge interest. I couldn't get dollars from my own bank this week.
"It looks like being a great weekend, but the focus of the team and management is firmly on the game. We're preparing for this match the same as if we were playing Kerry in the All-Ireland final. We're taking it very seriously."
Three major functions are planned for New York over the weekend. On Friday, Aughnasheelin GAA club are hosting a function in Gaelic Park, following a challenge between Aughnasheelin and Astoria Gaels.
The New York-based Leitrim club will host a huge Leitrim crowd in Rory Dolan's pub in Yonkers on Saturday night, while Rory Dolan's will also host the Allen Gaels club reunion after the game on Sunday.
