Eamonn Fitzmaurice felt Bryan Sheehan had nothing to lose by going for broke from his last second free-kick against Mayo.

The Kerry dead-ball specialist had only been on the field for two minutes when he was presented with the chance to win the game from a 55-metre free he had won himself following a clumsy tackle by Donal Vaughan. However, his kick dropped short with Mayo's makeshift full back Aidan O'Shea taking the ball from the clouds before the final whistle sounded.

"You trust the players to do what they are going to do, but it was probably a small bit too far out, particularly with the conditions," the Kerry manager said.

"I trust Bryan, he has kicked frees from that distance and further, but when you come into a game like that a bit late, it is a big ask.

"In many ways, it was a shot to nothing, so he was right to have a cut at it."
