Laois and Borris-in-Ossory Kilcotton stalwart Matthew Whelan admits winning a county SHC title has been the highlight of his sporting career so far.

Battle weary Whelan led from the back as his club won their first ever county SHC title when they defeated Rathdowney-Errill after a replay.

It was a titanic battle that once again went down to the wire, but Whelan admitted to the Leinster Express that it was an amazing feeling when the final whistle went.

"It's unbelievable, it has been about the hard work of the few years, not just this year," stated Whelan.

"We joined in 2011 and it was always our end goal to win a county championship. We were disappointed in 2013, maybe we thought we had our chance lost after the last game, but we worked hard between the last game and the replay, and I think it showed the true quality in our team."
