McGuinness: most counties would have Jack back

Jim McGuinness points out that Jack McCaffrey being back in the country but not part of the Dublin squad is an "unusual situation".

Dubs boss Jim Gavin could theoretically have recalled the reigning Footballer of the Year - who hasn't featured in this year's championship - to his squad for the biggest game of the season, but has opted not to do so. McCaffrey will therefore be in the stands on Saturday as Dublin and Mayo do battle in the All-Ireland final replay:

"What could make a difference for both teams on Saturday? Obviously for Dublin, it is a unique situation in that Jack McCaffrey, the reigning player of the year, is in the city and playing football and is theoretically available for selection but isn't involved," the former Donegal boss writes in The Irish Times.

"It's a really unusual situation. Karl Lacey was player of the year in 2012. And if Donegal made the 2013 All-Ireland final and Karl was away but reappeared after the semi-final, I find it hard to imagine that the squad wouldn't want him back in some capacity."
