A young ladies footballer is recovering in hospital after suffering a serious neck injury during a game in Down on Saturday evening.

The senior championship semi-final between Bryansford and Castlewellan was abandoned with 12 minutes remaining after Bryansford's Caitlin McCartan lost consciousness and suffered seizures after tripping over another player. She was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she is due to be moved out of intensive care today.

"She tripped over another girl who was on the ground and landed on her neck," Bryansford club chairman Peter Brannigan explained to the Irish News.

"Everybody rallied around and did what they could do to help, especially the Castlewellan girls, a couple who were nurses.

"She was taken to the Royal where she is improving. Her family was sent for in the middle of the night. She is not out of the woods yet, but the signs are encouraging. It has been quite a shock for everyone and I wish her a speedy recovery."
