Connacht champions Galway will have to plan without defender Cathal Sweeney for Sunday's All-Ireland quarter-final against Tipperary and there are fears the Killannin clubman might be out for the year.

Sweeney has suffered a recurrence of a dislocated shoulder which has disrupted his championship and it now seems like he may have to go for surgery to resolve the problem.

A twin brother of forward Patrick - one of three sets of twins in the Galway squad, the 25-year old is unlikely to see any action for the remainder of the summer as the Tribesmen return to Croke Park.

"It's not looking good for Cathal at the moment but the key thing now is to make sure the injury is resolved and that he comes back fitter and stronger.

"It's a blow to Cathal and the team but we will work with him and get it sorted out and move on from there," said Galway manager Kevin Walsh.

He is hoping to select from an otherwise full hand as they try to get their first win in Croke Park since Walsh himself was a key member of the side which won the 2001 All-Ireland title.

"It's hard to believe we have not won up there since. Hopefully, we can rectify that on Sunday.

"We have worked hard since the Connacht final win over Roscommon and hopefully we can build on that," added Walsh.
