A day in the life: Enda Smith

Roscommon GAA star Enda Smith discusses his daily routine with John O'Brien.

Morning

What time do you get up at?

Usually up at 7.30am

How long do you sleep for?

8 - 9 hours

What do you eat for breakfast?

Couple of poached eggs on brown bread & cereal.

Do you train/exercise in the mornings?

Not at the moment.

Are you in college/work? What are you studying/working at?

Currently have a summer job working in Bank of Ireland in Roscommon. I just finished my under grad in DCU in May and hope to pursue a Master's in Business in DCU in September.

Do you have a long commute to college/work?

I work in Roscommon town. It's about 40 minutes from home.

Is it hard to balance life between college/work and being an intercounty footballer?

At times it can be but it's just about planning in advance making sure you get the right balance between it all. It can be tough especially if you are playing college, U21 and senior football. This year has been my first year without u21 football and I have really noticed the difference.

 

Mid-morning/afternoon

Do you go to the gym in the morning/afternoon?

No, generally wait until the evening time.

How many times a week do you go to the gym?

Once or Twice.

What do you do in a typical gym session?

Depending on the time of year. Early in the year there is a lot of emphasis in trying to put on muscle whereas throughout the season when the games come you are trying to maintain your weight.

Where do you work out?

Roscommon town.

What would you eat for your lunch?

Generally, some sort of a stir fry that I would cook the night before work. Chicken, Veg, Noodles/Rice.

What does your diet consist of? Do you have to be very careful with what you eat?

Nothing out of the ordinary. You would have to watch it at times, depending on days of training/games.

Do you drink much water? How much?

3 litres a day.

 

Afternoon/Evening

What time do you get home from college/work at?

Normally get home around 6.45pm.

What do you usually have for dinner?

Chicken/Steak/Fish with Sweet potato, Veg.

What time do you have County training at?

8pm

Where do you train?

Roscommon town, Hyde Park

Is there anything in particular you would focus on in training yourself?

Always practice kicking off my both feet.

How often do you train a week?

3 pitch sessions, 1-2 gym sessions.

How long would a typical training session last?

80 minutes

Do you find it hard to motivate yourself for training sometimes?

No.

Would you often treat yourself with a takeaway/Chinese or a few pints? Or does this totally have to be cut out of your diet?

Not totally cut out, would like the odd takeaway.

What do you do to help take your mind of football?

Enjoy a bit of golf and a trip to the cinema.

On a typical day what time would you go to bed at?

Bed by 11 and asleep by half past.
