Cummins: Clare and Waterford need to change style

Former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins believes both Clare and Waterford will need to alter their defensive approach if either are to win this year's All-Ireland championship.

The Munster rivals meet again in this Sunday's Allianz National Hurling League Division One final replay after finishing all square on 0-22 apiece last time out and Cummins, a two-time All-Ireland winner himself, feels there needs to be a better balance between defence and attack from both sides.

"Both teams have fantastic players which is the real disappointing thing," Cummins told RTE Sport when looking back on the drawn game in Thurles.

"I chatted to a few Waterford supporters coming out of the game and they were giving out, saying 'It's too negative', and I said well, 'You played an expansive game against us (Tipperary) in the Munster final in 2011 and we scored seven goals, so which do you want?'

"Derek McGrath is trying to strike a balance. I don't think Waterford or Clare will win an All-Ireland playing that style of hurling."
