Captaincy issue annoys Moorehouse

Wicklow hurlers have been dealt a blow ahead of the start of the NHL as Bray's Christy Moorehouse has announced his retirement due to family commitments and the handling of the captaincy.

Moorehouse was irked by the way the process was handled this year as unlike previous years the captain came from the county champions, this year, Eire Og Greystones' Billy Cuddihy has been given the honour.

Having spent eight or nine years on the panel, Moorehouse feels that he cannot give the commitment necessary to carry on as he is raring a young family, but the captaincy issue was the final straw for him.

"For as long as I can remember, and I'm on the panel maybe eight or nine years, I've never seen the captaincy going to a club who weren't county champions," Moorehouse told the Wicklow People.

Moorehouse was part of the Bray side that has won back to back county titles and he was at odds to stress that the issue was only part of his reason.

"But look, it was never the biggest issue, the captaincy. I have family commitments, I have two little girls and a baby on the way and I've been on the panel for eight or nine years and that takes a toll on the body so I didn't need much of an excuse to be honest. I just felt that it was handled very poorly.

"I've no problem with Billy being captain. Billy's a great leader but I think it was handled very poorly."
